The month your net worth stops being owed

Example: in month 14, net worth stops being owed

You add it all up one evening. The savings account, the checking account, the credit card, the car loan. The total comes back with a word after it you weren't hoping for: owed. Say it's $5,400 owed.

Most people close the app right there. Stay with it a minute, because that number has a date attached to it, and the date is probably closer than you think.

The owed part shrinks faster than it feels

Your car loan payment already goes out automatically, so that balance gets smaller every month whether you think about it or not. Add a little extra to the credit card, $250 on top of the minimum, and put $150 aside each month. After the card's interest takes its bite, you're about $390 better off every month.

It doesn't feel like much on payday. Over a year it adds up to most of the gap, and in the fourteenth month your net worth tips over from owed to $60.

Why that month is worth circling

Until then, every dollar you have is already promised to someone else. After it, a small amount is actually yours. Sixty dollars won't change your life. Knowing it's yours changes how the next goal feels, and we think that month deserves more attention than it usually gets.

It's also a goal you can see from where you're standing. Being fully debt-free might be years away. This one is usually a year or two.

Some months won't cooperate

A medical bill, a wedding you can't miss, a car that picks the worst week to break down. A bad month moves the date back a few weeks; it doesn't send you back to the start. A tax refund or a bonus can pull it forward just as easily. What matters is knowing which way you're drifting.

Checking without the homework

Once a month, open renav, tap Update balance on each account and type what your bank app says. That's the whole habit. No receipts, no spending categories, no list of every purchase. Here's why we built it that way.

And if your gap is a lot bigger than this one, the flip might be years out. Pick a closer stop first, like the month your card reaches zero, and aim for that.
